Travertine is an example of a sedimentary form of rock and is
formed from precipitated carbonate minerals. Filled with
cavities and extremely porous in nature, this kind of rocks is
also called “Calcareous Tuff”. White is the color of the rock
in its purest form but due to the presence of other impurities
apart from carbonate-minerals it takes a yellowy-brown hue. The
usage of travertine floor tiles can be
observed way back during the reign of the Roman emperors. The
naming of this rock is quite interesting. Deposits of
Travertine were found in a place called Tivoli, which is an
Italian town. The Latin name for stones found over here (Tivoli
stone) bears resemblance to the word “Travertine”.
This kind of rocks is found in the vicinity of lakes, natural
water bodies or vales. The rock is a very important ingredient
used for the purpose of building since the middle-ages. A very
famous monument which has been made by the use of this stone is
the breathtaking Coliseum in Rome. It has also been used in
famous structures like Sacre Coeur (Paris) and Getty Centre
(California). The main countries where this stone was used
extensively were Greece, Italy and Turkey. In the present age
it is imported to United Kingdom also, and used for making
travertine floor tiles. Tiles which are shiny and
smooth in appearance are ideal for construction of garden
porticos/paths.
Nowadays anything is available, provided you know the place to
buy and that is also the case with travertine floor
tiles. Go to any big shopping mall or casino,
you are bound to see these tiles being present with all their
glory. The appearance of these tiles is quite similar to the
expensive marble tiles, and these tiles impart a fashionable
touch to your home. Travertine rock is frequently used nowadays
as façade/cladding in modern buildings. The eternal qualities
of artistic craftsmanship, warmth and permanence are displayed
with the use of this stone. There are four principal variations
present in the finishes of this rock, which are, honed (matte),
tumbled as well as brushed (textured), and last but not the
least, polished (shiny). The first finish, i.e., the
matte/honed finish ranks the highest in terms of popularity.
The tumbled variation is the least reflective in nature and the
polished one the most. There are different color choices
available, like, white, black, beige, gold, rustic red,
etc.
If you have travertine floor tiles used in your home,
then you need to take care of certain aspects in cleaning. One
has to sweep these tiles frequently and a broom having soft
bristles is recommended for the smooth/shiny finishes. The
textured variation of this stone can be effectively cleaned
with a semi-soft bristled broom. Cleaning products having
lemon, vinegar, or scouring creams/powders should not be used.
After using travertine floor tiles in your house you
will notice that the market value of your house has increased
tremendously. Being relatively less expensive as compared to
marble, home contactors have started using these stones more
extensively.
